Spectrum Health Systems Helps Man Get Clean During His Time at the Indian Creek Correctional Center in VA

Published On: July 26th, 2017

Indian Creek Correctional Center in Chesapeake, Virginia is one of only three correctional centers in the state that offers a substance abuse therapeutic community program to inmates with substance use disorders. Spectrum Health Systems is proud to partner with the Virginia Department of Corrections in providing these critical services.

Robert Brown struggled with addiction for three decades before he finally got clean. Recently, he described his long battle of addiction in an article in The Roanoke Times and shared how the program at Indian Creek ultimately helped him overcome his struggle – both mentally and physically.

Jim Piro, director of the therapeutic community program at Indian Creek, describes the successful program that takes a holistic approach to treatment, treating 1,000 men at a time, for substance use disorders and mental health issues. Participants learn healthy social and relationship skills, how to take responsibility for their actions and how to prevent relapse.

“We are proud to work with the staff and inmates at Indian Creek Correctional Center, and help people confront their substance abuse head on,” said Senior Vice President of Correctional Services Christopher Petrozzi. “Providing inmates with the skills and resources to assimilate back into the community following release is important, and we see similar stories of success every day in our many other prison-based programs across the nation.”
